News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, news and notes for Thursday...

  • As we reported on Twitter last night, a source tells The Cornell Basketball Blog that Ryan Wittman (Cornell '10) has accepted a grad student assistant coaching position at Boston College.  Wittman will be pursuing his MBA and will join a Boston College staff loaded with Cornell connections, including Steve Donahue (head coach), Nat Graham (Assistant Head Coach), Woody Kampmann  (Assistant Coach) and Izzi Metz (Director of Operations).
  • Nolan Cressler had 21 points on 5/9 shooting beyond the arc last night in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Summer Pro League per the Pittsburgh Tribune.  Cressler is briefly mentioned in a Tribune article covering the league.  Recaps of the game from last night are available on the Panther Lair and Panther Digest.
  • We are hearing that Louis Dale (Cornell '10) will sit out the 2013-2014 season as he recovers from a new ACL tear suffered while he was in the Greek A1 premier league.  Dale reportedly fully intends to return to professional basketball after a year of rehab.  Meanwhile, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) still has his sights set on returning to the NBA.  He had offseason back surgery and is expected to be able to compete for a roster spot somewhere next season.  His best path to the NBA might be a return to the D-League with the hope of another midseason call-up.
  • Jeff Aubry (Cornell '99) and his Mayaguez team are in the Puerto Rico BSN playoffs and trail Guayama, 1-0 in the series.
  • CuseNation.com recalls the 1966 NBA Draft selection of former Orangeman, Richard Dean and writes, "On Valentine's Day in 1966, he connected on all 13 of his attempts from the field against the Cornell Big Red on his way to a 30-point outing."
After three players decided to leave Purdue’s basketball team, it needed to add more talent back to its roster for the fall.
Purdue found the answers in Errick Peck from Cornell and Sterling Carter from Seattle University. Both players went under the radar coming out of college and were recruited by Purdue after finishing their final seasons at their respective schools. Peck is a forward from Indianapolis, Ind., who played in high school with former Purdue guard Kelsey Barlow. Carter is a guard from Seattle, WA. transferred to Seattle after red-shirting his freshman year at the University of the Pacific.

Last year as a senior at Cornell, Peck had a down year after missing all of the prior season with a knee injury. In 29 games for Cornell he averaged 24.5 minutes per game and 9.7 points per game. In his sophomore season he started 24 games and averaged 11 points per game.
“I wasn’t 100 percent last year, I played kind of on one knee,” Peck said. “It’ll be nice to have a season where I am fully 100 percent or close to it.”
... Peck said he has already imparted a little knowledge on the younger teammates.
“We still got two leaders in (Travis Carroll and Terone Johnson) so it’s pretty much their team,” Peck said. “I’m just on board to help contribute, but I got as much stories as they’re willing to listen to.”
Another benefit for Peck is while at Cornell he played against big basketball programs like Duke and Syracuse. He said playing teams like that will help with nerves.
“It’s kind of one of those things where you ‘been there, done that’ type deals,” Peck said. “The Big Ten is a gauntlet ... and there are a lot of good teams in the Big Ten so I haven’t been through that. You get a taste of it playing Syracuse, playing Minnesota, playing Wisconsin, playing at Duke you kind of get that atmosphere.”
Both players said they have transitioned over the last two weeks since joining the team. Peck said he has picked up on the offense and defense quicker than he thought he would, considering Cornell played differently. Carter said it’s been great to be working out with the team.
